Overview

Comments
R2 is not a heavily used resource outside of the AORN and ASPAN Standards, but the cost is reasonable compared to similar products on the market.  Having the standards available to all in electronic format as opposed to print is more convenient for the users.
Recently, we have added a "Patron Driven Acquisition" feature to R2 - this allows us to have temporary access to all the new items that R2 releases.  I (LZ) have found this personably useful for really up to date literature in books and for access to a book that would have cost $12 to interlibrary loan.

How is this product utilized by INTEGRIS Medical Library
R2 is used as a purchasing and storage platform for eBooks that we personally add to the library collection.  Sometimes, as in the case of the Guidelines for Perioperative Practice, departments will choose to buy a single online eBook license rather than several physical copies of an item they use in their department.

Alternatives to Current Access

Suggestions

  • Is this resources or it's contents duplicated elsewhere?
    • AORN Guidelines for Parioperative Practice are available from Stat!Ref in the latest edition
      • We keep a licence to one in R2 as well because it is so heavily used
    • We do have access to EBSCO Collection Manager which allows us to buy single licenses for eBooks
    • We have access to e-books through other venders (OVID, EBSCO, and CliniicalKey).
    • Of the 200 eBooks we have access to through R2 (purchased, archived, and PDA), only 14 are duplicated in other databases (7%)
  • Can R2 eBooks platform be purchased in components
    • The platform fee is the only annual cost, so besides buying e-books, this is the only component available
  • Other purchase options:
    • We could drop the R2 platform.  If there is a request for the standards we purchase through R2 to be updated in the future, we could look at cost sharing with that department and how else to distribute the item (EBSCO does not offer them).
